about

This one was FUN! It's essentially the 4th grade Georgia Standards set to music. The explorers mentioned and the facts included are exactly what our students learn about in their Social Studies unit on explorers.

Now, that sounds sort of dry, I know :) Beyond the details and the learnin' is a funky, fun song. The hook is easy to remember, so sing along.

...at the top of your lungs.

...in the shower.

...or in the car.

...or in my class ;)

Explorers

*Refrain*
This is the story of explorers, braving unknown horrors, you gotta get somewhere
This is the story of explorers, this story's not a borer, you better get down on the history…

Let me tell you about John Cabot, had some very British habits
'Cause he's straight outta England, it's true
This dude had no maps, but he wanted to see Asia
& What's a limey bloke to do?

It was a family affair, him and his boy Sebastian
Bumped into Canada where there was lots of fishin'
& Other Euros followed, told Canada, 'Holla!"
It may smell fishy, but it's true

*Refrain*

Vasco Nuñez de Balboa,
Yes I know his name is not an easy flow-uh
He popped into a place called Panama,
Though he hailed from Spain (can I get an Hola?)

He found the Pacific, an overland route
Fought with some natives, and ate some local fruit
First European to reach that spot
Through mountains and jungles, so tell me sucka what you got?

*Refrain*

Juan Ponce de Leon, he tried to jump on
The path to the fountain of youth (and some gold!)
He ended up in Florida, natives they were saying, "Wha?"
(p.s. his beard was awesome, that's the truth)

The Spanish word for flower gave Florida its name
Once Ponce dropped in things were never the same
The Spaniards started coming from across the pond
They wanted to be cool just like "The Ponze"

*Refrain*

That brings us to a man called Christopher Columbus:
A dreamer, explorer, mac-daddy alumnus
He grew up in Italy but was funded by Spain
Said, "King Ferdinand, Isabella, I'll explain!

There's simply no need for your deep trepidation!
A quicker route to Asia would bring glory to your nation!"
Took the Niña, the Pinta, the Santa Maria
But instead he found the New World - Peace, see ya!

*Refrain*

Henry Hudson, English by birth,
And when it came to luck this dude had the worst
Tried to find the Northwest passage to Asia,
But his crew kicked him out (that's a punk move, playa!)

Sailed up the Hudson River in what is now New York
He couldn't give up - he would look like (such a dork)
But his crew got feisty, and little bit mental
But the joke was on them - that boat was a rental!

*Refrain*

Jacques Cartier hailed from France,
And every picture that I've seen shows this dude in puffy pants
But styles change with time, so don't let it phase ya
Just remember he wanted to find a water route to Asia

He sailed 1,000 miles on the St. Lawrence River
(that's in Canada, yo - once again I deliver)
He tried to create a settlement, but it didn't last the winter
Maybe he should have ditched the puffy pants and brought a sweater!

*Refrain*
