about
The last track composed for the album.
*Actually composed using an app on my iPhone called "iMaschine." If you want world-class hip-hop and electro beat-making in your pocket... Just trust me. Download iMaschine. The most creative app I've ever used. Now... back to the write-up :)
As I was compiling the tracks for "Get Your Learn On" I realized that I had addressed language arts, math, science, social studies... but nothing about the MOST IMPORTANT PART! The love of learning and the drive to pursue personal excellence seem to be fading away in so many students these days. I felt this myself in school... hiding your ability or not striving for top marks because that would keep you from being socially acceptable.
Seriously?
If you've been sucked into this ridiculous lie or if your students seem to be on "Team Lethargy" then blast this track from the mountaintops. Tell them, "Get your LEARN ON!"
*and yes, the irony of an educational song containing terrible grammar in its title has not escaped me ;)

Get Your Learn On

Everybody rollin’ all across the land
Work your plan, man & (get your learn on)
Knocked down, getting up, no giving in
It’s time to stand (get your learn on)
Sittin’ here thinkin’ all about the ways and the days
That I tried, okay I lied - I can say that now
But hangin’ with the top shelf crew seemed so seemed un-me
Maybe you? I mean somebody tell me
How to go far, reach for the proverbial star
But miss the spotlight – that wouldn’t feel right
Man I had it wrong, so this song, a beat on my iPhone
Showed up at the end to break it on down…
You need to get your learn on...
Keepin’ it real seems like a really big deal (for realz)
As I kneel in my culture’s sanctuary
Public school walls, packed halls, and the stalls –
No one fall or your rep is in the mortuary
Pressure that you’re under – I felt it too
Tried to hide what’s inside, play the “yeah me too”
But a bird’s gotta fly so look up to the sky
And embrace the concept that the best you hasn’t been seen yet
How cool would it be to blow somebody’s mind?
You need to get your learn on…
Everybody rollin’ all across the land
Work your plan, man & (get your learn on)
Knocked down, getting up, no giving in
It’s time to stand (get your learn on)
Nothing ever happens without a first step
And I bet you’d survive your ascent to the skies
Bring in a self-high-five, don’t close your eyes
Or plagiarize somebody else’s destiny – you know what I mean?
You want to be "true?" Here’s what you do:
Don’t punk out for the masses, living life like molasses
You don’t have to explain like, “sorry – I have a brain.”
Let’s make that sucker strain…
And get your learn on…
