about
After extensive test-group research (aka playing the song for hundreds of elementary-schoolers) this one was unanimously determined to be "the coolest."
That's the best compliment a songwriter can hear, since these songs are like my kids after all this time! "Solar System" takes you from the sun all the way to Pluto and back. Facts about each, the order, number of moons, origin of the names, etc. All there & more.
...and I DARE you to not bob your head while you listen. Go ahead.
...I'll wait.
...See? Can't be done! :)

Solar System

*REFRAIN*
Let’s talk ‘bout the stars
The planets and the space where they are
And our solar system,
The sights in the sky
It feels like they’re up there so high
Look up and you won’t miss them
Let’s start with the sun, son
In the summertime it’s so fun, fun
Warming everything – that’s because Earth leans
Our hemisphere tilts toward the sun
But winter comes and we tilt away
Getting less direct sun rays
Our seasons, warmth, and yes our light
Come from the sun (alright alright alright)
*Refrain*
First in line is Mercury
This little guy is atmosphere-free
No moons and very low gravity
The Roman version of the Greek Hermes
Then Venus is the next one
A little bit further from the Sun
Hottest planet that we've got
It's the atmosphere that keeps it hot...
*Refrain*
Third out is Earth
The planet of your birth
Breathable air, water everywhere
One moon that shines in the night out there
Fourth out is the planet Mars
Red planet we can see up with the stars
It's very cold, it's very old
Named for the Roman God of War
*Refrain*
Fifth is the biggest, it's Jupiter
318 times as big as Earth
King of the gods in the Roman Days
63 moons can I get a “hey, hey?”
Sixth is Saturn - got some really big rings
Father of Jupiter, yes the king
62 moons, most of ‘em small
Haven't even gotten 'round to naming them all!
*Refrain*
Seven is Uranus, he's the god of the sky
Planet is flipped, poles are on the side
Methane in the atmosphere
Got a blue-green color that's kinda weird
Eight is Neptune, made of gas
Surface winds get crazy fast
Got pretty far out with 13 moons
Like the ocean yeah it's colored blue
*Refrain*
Then there's Pluto, smaller than the moon
And if you ask the IAU
It's too small, so it's just a dwarf Planet
Me, myself, I just can't stand it
Though we are ending this science tune
We'd be remiss to forget our own moon
Pulls the tides & reflects light
As we lay down for the night
*Refrain*
